Otford Table Tennis Club will never be quite the same again! On Monday 14th July 2008, founder members Doreen and Dudley Levey decided that after 37 years in charge it was time to pass on the responsibility for the club to new hands.
The existing members of the club arranged a surprise party for Doreen and Dudley and contacted players past and present to attend to celebrate the efforts of the retiring couple. Former players travelled from across the South East to pass on their thanks and to see old friends.
Over the many years that the club has been in existence, many fine players have represented Otford in the local leagues. Thanks to Doreen and Dudley, the club has always been run in a friendly manner with room for social members and youngsters to play alongside the more serious competitors.
A thank you speech was delivered by fellow founder member Ken Gunderson who reminded Doreen and Dudley of many of the names from the past and the how the club was first formed. Former professional cricketer David Fulton presented a commemorative trophy to the couple; and recalled stories of his pre-cricket career as a nationally ranked junior table tennis player coached by Doreen.
Both Doreen and Dudley said a few words and expressed the pleasure in having been involved and seen so many enjoying themselves playing the sport.
All those who attended enjoyed snacks and drinks culminating in rapturous applause and raised glasses.
